Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
Watching my preliminary task now, it is clear I have progressed significantly, here is my preliminary task;
Research
In preparation for the prelim we didn't conduct any audience research, were as in preparation for the production of a Anidone I conducted detailed research into the audiences of other films, in order to secure the primary and secondary target audiences our our opening.
Not only did we research into our audience, but we explored the traditions and taboos of the fantasy genre, from shot types to colour schemes, we educated ourselves on every aspect of prepoduction, production and post preduction.
Planning Docs and time management
This aspect of the prelim was very minimal, especially in relation to our opening. The planning of Anidone took hours over weeks, and reacquired constant change and updates. For this we utilised Google Documents, underwent Face Time meetings, and paper time plans. The prelim however required five minutes of planning, and was completed in a few hours
Pitching
There was no pitch in preparation for the prelim, however this was a necessary step in the production of Anidone as I had to find a group eager to work with me on the project.Casting
Working in set groups casting wasn't something we were concerned with. In preparation for Anidone however we had to work through this. We new from the start that Sophie would play the protagonist as we had built the character around her, we also quickly secured an actor for Zosil. We advertised further roles on social media.Cast wise we did face a slight problem, in that our actor lined up to play Trehsarck couldn't make the shoot, luckily we were able to quickly reassign the role.
Props, costume, set-dressing, and mise-en-scene
From disregarding these components in the prelim, these factors required a great amount of attention. All five of our characters costumes were created from scratch, not only did the assembling of these require significant attention, but we also conducted research into the intricate styles of medieval themed costumes in the fantasy genre.Set dressing less so, we were fortunate to find such a perfect location, and aside for the odd log that need moving form the protagonist's path, we didn't have to adjust our set.
Sample Shoots
This ties in with planning; as each shoot required a large amount of effort (we required a lot of kit which had to be carried quite far). Therefor we didn't want our time on set to be wasted and carried out practice shoots to gain a good understanding of the characters positioning and movements.
Idents
Unlike my prelim I had created a production company ident for Anidone. With this, I tried to create an ident that would suggest an atmosphere before the film had begun (accompanying sound in the same key as soundtrack, a storm featured). This worked well and improved the quality of my opening in comparison with the prelim.
Range of FX/ Editing
There was no FX used in the prelim, everything about the editing was minimal. For Anidone we created titles, a storm, adjusted colour correction, stabilised images etc. Editing of Anidone was a far more thorough process.Because of the increased editing process we were able to release 4 drastically differing rough cuts before the release of our opening, each showing significant progression from the other. With such a limited editing process this was not possible for the prelim.
Range of shots and keeping shots steady
Alike other openings in our genre, we used a variety of shot types in our fantasy opening. This was done purposefully and helped create a fast paced interesting array of clips.Keeping shots steady was a key part of both films, were in the prelim we used a tripod to ensure this, in Anidone we also used teqniques such as three contact points whilst filming to achieve a steady shot.
Working in a group/ role allocation
The prelim was shot with little detailed discussion over who did what, this was not the case for our opening. From the off Sophie and myself had clear distinct roles Sophie as Costume designer, and I as director (Sophie could not direct as she would act in every scene). Narrative idea was simple for prelim much and didn't require discussion.
Location
Little thought was given in relation to the prelim, lighting was not considered, and the set was simply chosen from availability. In comparison, the set of Anidone was a result of hours searching the moor side, regardless of the fierce weather conditions.Audience feedback
For Anidone I gathered a substantial amount of audience feedback, this can be viewed below.Sound
The only sound we concerned ourselves with in the prelim was the dialogue, and even hen it was largely improvised with little attention. This was not the case for the opening. We researched into and created foley of the characters walking, composed a soundtrack, and added ambience effects.
