Final shoot

Our last shoot was an overall success, with all characters present and suitable weather conditions, we were able to conclude the shooting of Anidone. There was a slight hitch as as camera man who was meant to film the last shot bailed last minute, luckily we were able to find a last minute stand in. However the stand in had never filmed before and as a result the last shot is a little poor.

Here is the short behind the scenes video we recorded over multiple shoots and released as part of the distribution of our film.

Emergency production meeting 28/03/17

Today Sophie and I held an emergency production meeting to discuss the reshoot of missing footage. Despite shooting the first scene some time ago it has since being wiped from the SD card, due to this we will reshoot tomorrow.

Unfortunately the weather is poor, so we will use towels to protect the camera.

4th shoot

On Saturday the 25th March Sophie and I set out to film the introduction of ZOSIL, along with AGOR and ANIDONE shots. Costumes donned, fake fur applied we were set to film; the weather was gorgeous and the lighting perfect. Unfortunately our fortune ended there. Camera on, live view.. ah .. no SD card. Our efforts to barter an SD card from walkers were to no avail, and the once glorious sunshine was beginning to set. Last resort, with the easiest removed costume, Sophie took my credit card and sprinted the 3 mile round trip to Tesco's.

In the end the footage we came away with was surprisingly good, so despite a minor mishap, it was not a wasted trip.

We did however change the script a little, as William Spence (playing Zosil) found a handy boy size cave. This turned out a great way to introduce his character. We filmed a variety of shots of him in this cave, my favourite being a rack focus shot, of firstly fern, and the characters legs.

2nd shoot

Fair to say, Media studies A level has surpassed my expectations. What I thought was a relatively simple course has turned out to be a military scale test of mental and physical resilience, as you will now hear.

Yesterday, (Sunday 19th of March) Sophie and I scrambled up onto Ilkley Moor in order to film the second segment of our film opening. We had planned to enrol a volunteer to shoot the scenes involving us both, however with no one available to help, we persevered and deciding to focus on close-up shots involving just one character at a time.

Having clambered 2 miles to set, the weather took a turn for the worse. Rain, wind, thunder, hail, the skies had opened up throwing an array of elements directly over our non waterproof equipment and costumes. The use of water soluble glue meant fur was now falling from my face and costume, the face paint smudged, and in the chaos, I slipped down a bank directly into a vat of bird poo.. fair to say conditions were not ideal. Still. We had dragged 40kg of kit up a mountain side, and we were going to film.

We shot point of view shots from Anidone’s perspective, these shots looked up and around and went in and out of focus to show confusion and a state of just waking up. We also got the shots of the branches we needed for the tittles to grow out from, however, it was extremely windy and rainy, the branches were moving and thus we had issues maintaining focus.

After filming, we headed back down the hillside. The storm had taken its toll and we looked a sight; My face a wash of mud and smudged brown paint, few lumps of fur remained clinging to my face and arms, and patches of glue now resembled mysterious disease. Dripping wet, with wild hair, this pair of feral children dragged themselves into the rather prestigious, upper class town of Ilkley. Parents physically moved their children away from us and we were turned down from the public toilets. Despite our ordeal we managed to get some footage, and incredibly no cameras were harmed in the process.

The worst part? 10 minuets after returning to civilisation, the storm cleared and a brilliant sunshine lit the moor. ‘The golden hour’, optimum lighting, and we'd missed it.

Anchor Productions idnet

Planning

I want my ident to be sinister, similar to the opening titles of the BBC's dark comedy "Stag". This would set the scene for a slightly tense film opening, aspects of the ident foreshadowing the film opening.

An anchor will flash on and of the screen accompanied by lightning and the sound of thunder. This will be over a background of a stormy sea. with the flash of lightening the ocean background will light up. Here is a draft i drew up on adobe draw of the words and image that will flash on during my ident.

Filming

Wonderfully my friend has lent me a DJI Phantom 3 Advanced and as a result I was able to acquire footage of some decent swell at Scarborough Bay.

Production

For production of the ident I used Adobe Illustrator and Adobe after effects.

The first step was to find an anchor image, convert it to a vector and edit the shape so it was symmetrical. Converting the image to a vector meant that it could now be treated as a 3D object (necessary to be affected by light etc). On a separate layer I added an "Anchor Productions" vector.

Next I imported both vectors and the waves clip into after affects. As the waves video was significantly longer than the ident would be I chose the most suitable clip.  The waves would sustain throughout the entire ident however the vector graphics would not, so I adjusted the timings of each entity.

Using after effects I was then able to add lightening, then when struck, would light up the wave video behind.

Finally, diegetic and non diegetic sound.

Non diegetic; To create a sinister atmosphere I accompanied the ident four note progression  in a minor key, played on a double bass. I built this into the soundtrack.

Digetic; I needed to create the sound of a storm - thunder, lightning and heavy rain, these effects were available on Final Cut Pro. The thunder effect I added worked well because it replicated the sound of crashing waves.

Here is the finished ident;
