Films include The Lords of the Rings trilogy (2001 - 2003 I believe this to be the greatest fantasy film, inspiring many others), Narnia (2005), Harry Potter series (2001 - 2011), the Hobbit trilogy (2013 - 2014).
Commercial aspects
The most successful fantasy films were expensive to produce, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, being the most expensive, costing Disnehy $300 million to produce in 2007. This film went on to gross at $963 million, only the 3rd highest grossing of the series.
Still, many of the highest-grossing films have had a significantly lower budget. Star Wars: The Force Awakens was a box office behemoth grossing $2.06 billion, but cost only $200 million to produce. Jurassic World had a budget of $150 million and grossed $1.67 billion.

Our survey was completed by over 50 people ages ranging from 15 - 69. In addition to helping define our target audience, it provided us with insight into the properties people look for within the genre. Below are the responses from the question - "What do you look for in a fantasy film?"

To further our knowledge on the audience of fantasy films we utilised the website YouGov ("an international Internet-based market research firm"). With YouGov we could acquire a larger demographic of the type people who like different fantasy films.
Research from another source showed The Hobbit showed a primary audience of predominantly males aged 18 - 24, as demographics from the 3 films show below. As this film is similar to ours we have a similar preliminary target audience.
Despite sharing the fantasy genre, YouGov research shows the primary audience of Harry Potter to be young females. From this we can see fantasy genre is open to audiences of both genders, but consistently attracts a younger audience (18 - 24 years).
In review of this research, we have decided our primary target audience would males aged 12 - 24. This is quite a broad age range, but given the range of fantasy target audiences, it is warranted. Females of the same age would fill our secondary target audience as our film contains stereotypes that appeal to this gender. For example our strong female lead, which was one of the things called for in the survey responses.
Fantasy films average at a BBFC rating of PG to 12, ours will fit within this range. The age rating of our film will be a 12A (suitable for ages 12 and above). Our film will have to be suitable for younger audiences as the make up a substantial percentage of our target audience.
Below is the following specification for this rating from the BBFC.
Films classified 12A and video works classified 12 contain material that is not generally suitable for children aged under 12. No one younger than 12 may see a 12A film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult.
Drugs - Misuse of drugs must be infrequent and should not be glamorised or give instructional detail.
Imitable behaviour - No promotion of potentially dangerous behaviour which children are likely to copy. No glamorisation of realistic or easily accessible weapons such as knives. No endorsement of anti-social behaviour.
Language - There may be moderate language. Strong language may be permitted, depending on the manner in which it is used, who is using the language, its frequency within the work as a whole and any special contextual justification.
Nudity - There may be nudity, but in a sexual context it must be brief and discreet.
Sex - Sexual activity may be briefly and discreetly portrayed. Moderate sex references are permitted, but frequent crude references are unlikely to be acceptable.
Threat - There may be moderate physical and psychological threat and horror sequences. Although some scenes may be disturbing, the overall tone should not be. Horror sequences should not be frequent or sustained.
Violence - There may be moderate violence but it should not dwell on detail. There should be no emphasis on injuries or blood, but occasional gory moments may be permitted if justified by the context. Sexual violence may only be implied or briefly and discreetly indicated, and its depiction must be justified by context.
Discrimination - Discriminatory language or behaviour must not be endorsed by the work as a whole. Aggressive discriminatory language or behaviour is unlikely to be acceptable unless clearly condemned.
